The Oilers Get Blanked At Home By Red Wings

The Edmonton Oilers are just not playing well to start the year and they have now lost five of their last seven games after falling by a score of 4-0 at home to the Red Wings. This team has way too much firepower to be struggling on offense like they have been, especially since scoring is way up to start the year so far. The Oilers have averaged just 2.38 gpg over their last eight games and they have scored more than three goals just twice on the year. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins leads the team in scoring this year with six goals, while Connor McDavid is 2nd with five. McDavid leads them in points with 16. The Oilers have gone just 1-3 on the road so far. Taking the loss against the Oilers was Cam Talbot, who allowed four goals on 35 shot attempts to fall to 4-8 with a 3.17 GAA and a .903 save percentage on the road, including 1-3 with a 2.34 GAA and a .925 save percentage on the road. In his career, he has gone 49-45 with a 2.33 GAA on the road and 11-16 with a 2.67 GAA during the month of November, while against the Metro Division he has gone 22-20 with a 2.27 GAA, including 5-2 with a 2.93 GAA against the Islanders.

The Oilers have been a poor offensive team so far as they come in ranked 31st in the league in scoring at 2.31 gpg, while also ranking 2nd in shots taken (37.8 spg) and 25th in power play conversions, converting on 14.6% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice, they come in ranked 23rd in the league in goals allowed, giving up 3.31 gpg, while also ranking 10th in shots allowed (31.5 spg) and 31st in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 32.6% of their chances.

Eberle & Leddy Lead Isles Over Avs

The New York Islanders are really playing well at the moment as they have won six of their last eight games, including taking a 6-4 decision at home against the Avalanche on Sunday. The offense really started slowly for the Isles this year as they averaged just 2.5 gpg through their first six games, but they have now averaged 4.75 gpg over their last eight games. Jordan Eberle and Nick Leddy each had two goals to lead the Islanders to the win over the Avs. Eberle now has four goals on the year, while Leddy has three. Also scoring in the win was Scott Mayfield, which was his 2nd of the year and Johnny Boychuk, which was his 1st of the year. The Islanders have gone a strong 5-1 at home so far. Grabbing the win against the Avalanche was Thomas Greiss, who stopped 31 of the 35 shots that he faced to improve to 3-3 with a 3.75 GAA and a .896 save percentage on the year. Jaroslav Halak is expected to get the start in this one and he has gone 5-3 with a 2.83 GAA and a .906 save percentage on the year overall, including 3-0 with a 3.00 GAA and a .908 save percentage here at home. In his career, he has gone 127-72 with a 2.25 GAA in his home games and 27-30 with a 2.23 GAA during the month of November, plus he has gone 41-41 with a 2.39 GAA against the Pacific Division, while against the Oilers in his career he has gone 8-5 with a 2.12 GAA.

The Islanders enter this contest ranked 3rd in the league in scoring at 3.79 gpg, while also ranking 22nd in shots taken (30.8 spg) and 8th in power play conversions, converting on 22.4% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice, they have been below average as they come in ranked 21st in goals allowed, giving up 3.21 gpg, while also ranking 19th in shots allowed (32.6 spg) and 13th in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 18.8% of their chances.

Trends

Edmonton is:

  • 18-38 in their last 56 games following a loss of three or more goals
  • 31-92 in their last 123 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600

New York is:

  • 6-1 in their last seven vs. a team with a winning % below .400
  • 30-8 in their last 38 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400

The Oilers are off to a slow start this year and a big reason has been their offense. The Islanders got off to a slow start this year, but they have really turned it around of late and their offense has been a big part of that. The Oilers were just shutout at home by the Red Wings and have averaged just 2.38 gpg over their last eight games. The Isles are off a 6-4 win over the Avs at home and have now gone 5-1 here at home and they have averaged 5.00 gpg in those games. I just don’t see how the Oilers will come up with enough offense to stay in this game and the clincher is the fact that the Oilers are just 1-9 in their last road games in this series. Take the Islanders in this one.

Pick: New York -116*
